Lonely, Grieving, and Broken: 15 Verses For When The Holidays Are Hard

The holiday season is a complex mix of beauty (Hello, Christmas Trees!) and pain. Many of us are anticipating being near friends and family in the next week. We’re dreaming of turkey and pecan pie. And if you’re like me, of putting the Christmas tree up before the leftovers even make it into the refrigerator.

But there are others of us who are heading into the holidays full of dread.

For many people, this is the first holiday season without a loved one. There are others who will experience Thanksgiving alone. Countless people will sit around tables dodging harsh words from the people they love. And many a broken heart will sing “Joy to the World.”

We like to talk about the holly and jolly of the season, but there is a darker side to the holidays that we rarely acknowledge and that is the pain that comes when the holidays are hard.

Joy to the world, the Lord is come

Let earth receive her King

Let every heart prepare Him room

And Heaven and nature sing

And Heaven and nature sing

And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing

Our King has come!

I don’t know what you are experiencing this holiday season, but like most of us, you are probably experiencing some wild concoction of joy and sorrow. It comes with the territory this side of Heaven.

Isn’t that what we celebrate this time of year- that light came into the darkness?

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5 ESV

Jesus came to meet us in our pain (Luke 4:18-19). That’s what this season is about.

Do you need Truth to cling to for the holidays? I’ve got you, friend. Below are 15 verses for when the holidays are hard.

Remember, this is why He came.

Psalm 63:3-5 ESV- Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips,

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 ESV
